Youth Employment Services workers vote to strike

Bargaining team demands better offer for employees who help young people get jobs, training and education.

Toronto (7 July 2010) - Youth Employment Services (YES) workers, members of Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) Local 512, have voted 89% in favour of a striking if necessary to win a fair contract.

The vote was held after the employer walked away from the table.

The bargaining team is looking for better wages and health benefits and is disappointed by the employer’s unwillingness to improve the contract language.

“We have a strong strike vote,” says bargaining team member Michael Louca. “And we are hoping that will provide the incentive needed to get the employer back to the table.”

The wage increases offered by the employer would - if accepted - ensure that YES remains the lowest-paid agency in Toronto.

This is unacceptable to the bargaining team, which is continuing to demand a better offer. Sp far, the employer has refused a request to return to negotiations. Negotiations began in December 2009.

YES workers provide youth with assistance in getting jobs, training and education.
