"You don’t need a break on tuition. Mother Earth can look after the environment herself. And well-paying, secure jobs are overrated."
Toronto (13 Aug. 2015) — To help mark the UN's International Youth Day, OPSEU's Young Workers Committee yesterday launched a tongue-and-cheek campaign called Don't Vote, which is aimed at inspiring young Canadians to take part in the upcoming federal election.
“More than anyone else, young Canadians face an uncertain future," said OPSEU/NUPGE President Warren (Smokey) Thomas during the campaign launch yesterday.
"They must not make the mistake of leaving their fate solely in the hands of their parents and grandparents. I believe the most important thing that young people can have on their resume is that they voted in the 2015 federal election.”
It's humour vs. complacency
Featuring videos, tweets, and a variety of sharable posters, the Don't Vote campaign is using humour to increase the under-25 voting participation rate which, in the last election, was just 39 per cent.
"After all," reads some of the campaign literature, "you don’t need a break on tuition. Mother Earth can look after the environment herself. And well-paying, secure jobs are overrated. This election, if you don’t care about jobs, the environment, social justice, or any other issue that affects you and your family, the best way you can show it is: #dontvote."
