2010 theme recognizes that population and industrial growth are adding new sources of pollution and increased demand for clean water around the world.
Ottawa (23 March 2010) - Today is World Water Day around the globe, an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro.
This year’s theme — Clean Water for a Healthy World — recognizes that population and industrial growth are adding new sources of pollution and increased demand for clean water around the world.
In Canada, the federal government has acknowledged the occasion by announcing $3.7 million in federal funding for two Canadian universities (Saskatchewan and Lethbridge) to study water quality. The money will fund research that will address issues such as water quality and quantity.
World Water Day comes less than two weeks after Bottled Water Free Day.
The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is pleased to join with all citizens and with groups everywhere in marking these occasions and helping to raise awareness of the important environmental issues at stake for humanity in countries around the world.
