Halifax (07 Dec. 2012) – Members of Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) employed by Crothall Healthcare, who work at the Capital District Health Authority (CDHA), have voted 83 per cent in favour of a strike to back the demands of their bargaining committee during negotiations.
“These women and men provide a vital service and are an important part of the health care team,” says Joan Jessome, NSGEU President. “The principle of wage parity is very important to the membership who works alongside other Capital Health employees doing the exact same job.”
Outstanding issues include wage parity and job security.
The workers are part of the core team responsible for handling 11 million pounds of laundry annually for most of CDHA, IWK, South Shore and Colchester regional hospitals, as well as several nursing homes in these areas. They wash, dry, finish and deliver this laundry to help ensure our health care facilities are kept clean.
There are approximately 60 members of the local and 50 voted yes to a strike.
The previous collective agreement expired July 7, 2012.
Conciliation dates are scheduled for December 17 and 18.
