Ottawa (8 May 2015)—Mother's Day is a time to honour mothers, motherhood, and the influence of mothers in society. With a federal election just around the corner, this Mother’s Day the Alliance for Women’s Rights wants to engage moms in a conversation about issues that matter to them.
As part of their Up for Debate campaign that is calling on all political parties to commit to a federal leaders’ debate on women’s issues, the Alliance wants to know what issues are important to moms in Canada.
They are asking Canadian mothers to share what they care about most in the lead up to the 2015 federal election by using #UpforDebate on Twitter, Facebook or by email: info@upfordebate.ca. Images (such as selfies with a message), videos and text are all welcome.
The Alliance has secured the commitment of Thomas Mulcair and Elizabeth May but has not received a commitment from Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau. A petition has been created encouraging the federal leaders to commit to the debate. The petition is located at change.org petition.
Alliance for Women’s Rights
The Alliance for Women’s Rights is made up of over 150 women’s organizations and their allies from across Canada. The Alliance created the Up for Debate campaign, which is calling on political parties to commit to a federal leaders debate on women’s issues. The campaign calls upon the federal parties to commit to ending violence against women, ending women’s economic inequality and to support women’s leadership and organizations.
