"We need more creative and forward thinking by Canada Post. Right now its decisions are hurting Canadians two-fold: cutting service and raising prices. Sounds like a recipe for privatization." - James Clancy, NUPGE National President.
Ottawa (24 Jan. 2014) – Concerned about the direction of postal services in Canada? Come out to a rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on January 26 to have your voice heard.
Rallies across Canada taking place on Sunday, January 26
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is planning to greet the return of Parliament with a rally and march to demand the reversal of planned cuts to the postal service.
Similar actions are taking place in various cities across the country.
In Ottawa, people can meet at 1 p.m. on Sunday Dundonald Park, corner of Lyon and Somerset in order to march to the Prime Minister's office at Elgin and Wellington.
Cuts to service, increase in costs have been received poorly by Canadians
On December 11, 2013, Canada Post announced drastic cutbacks to our public postal service. The Conservative government supports Canada Post's plan to eliminate all door-to-door mail delivery and dramatically increase stamp prices. This is just the latest attack on Canada's public postal service.
"When you compare this to the innovative changes being made around the world to postal service, like postal banking Canada Post looks like it has its head in the sand," says James Clancy, National President of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE). "We need more creative and forward thinking by Canada Post. Right now its decisions are hurting Canadians two-fold: cut service and raise prices. Sounds like a recipe for privatization."
"We encourage National Union members across the country to find an action to attend on Sunday and have your say. By working together, we can turn back this tide," Clancy said.
Help save Canada Post
If you cannot make it to a rally, you can show your support for Canada Post by going to CUPW's website to send a message to your Member of Parliament. You can also print and display a window sign for your home.
