“The impact of these austerity measures will be felt far and wide — from the young to our elderly and most vulnerable. The public sector cuts, layoffs and closures are hitting our rural communities the hardest. Is this the stronger tomorrow we were promised?” — Jerry Earle, NAPE President
St. John's (20 April 2016) — The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) has launched a public relations advertising campaign as part of the push back efforts following the provincial budget that was brought down last week by the Liberal government. The first stage of the campaign will include ads that will run province-wide on an array of platforms.
Cuts to public services, layoffs, closures — is this just the beginning?
“Before the election, during the election, and even after the election, Dwight Ball and his Liberals made a number of commitments to the people of this province — one of those being that public sector jobs would be safe. These promises have been broken. We are all left wondering, what’s their word worth now?” said NAPE President Jerry Earle. “In the past few days, we have seen layoffs, office and facility closures, and cuts to the vital public services that the people of the province depend on. We are fearful that this is only the beginning.”
“The impact of these austerity measures will be felt far and wide — from the young to our elderly and most vulnerable. The public sector cuts, layoffs and closures are hitting our rural communities the hardest,” said Earle. “Is this the stronger tomorrow we were promised?”
NAPE/NUPGE to fight for quality public services across the province
“The reaction by the people of the province has been rightfully swift and angry,” said Earle. “Regressive levies that unfairly target our province’s less fortunate and elderly, cutting jobs and services, removing financial assistance for students, increasing class sizes, removing 24-hour snow clearing on our highways, leaving people in fear of what’s to come in the gall budget — none of these will help stimulate or diversify our struggling economy,” stated Earle. “In fact, we are concerned that it may send our economy into a tailspin.”
“And this is only Stage 1.”
“We have no choice but to forcefully push back against this budget. These ads are just the beginning,” said Earle.
