One Billion Rising
One of the global campaigns is One Billion Rising. The campaign stresses the reality that one in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. This equates to one billion women being violated. The campaign calls for an end to violence against women and for gender equality. The goal is to have one billion women and those that love them walk out, dance, rise up and demand an end to violence against women and girls.
Information on One Billion Rising can be found at www.onebillionrising.org. The website provides a map showing activities around the planet. It also contains a toolkit with information on how to organize an activity, for using social media, organizing a flash mob, etc.
Women’s Memorial Marches
The Women’s Memorial March began in 1991 in response to the anger and frustration of Vancouver’s Downtown East Side community following the murder of a Coast Salish woman. The March is now an annual event which honours the lives of Indigenous women and girls who died or disappeared in Canada.
The March provides an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to come together to speak out against violence experienced by Indigenous women and to call for change.
Information on the Women’s Memorial March and how you can spread awareness or join/organize your own march can be found at https://womensmemorialmarch.wordpress.com/
The National Union is encouraging its members and all Canadians to take action on February 14 to end violence against women and girls in Canada and around the world.
