Turn out for budget consultations, NSGEU urges

Joan Jessome, president of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE)Halifax (22 Jan. 2010) - The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) is asking public sector workers to turn out in force for a series of 23 budget consultation meetings that the province's NDP government is planning across the province. • Video Message

NSGEU president Joan Jessome says it is critical for the voices of public sector workers to be heard during this process.

"We know how important the service is that you provide every day to the people of this province," Jessome says in a video message to NSGEU members.

"We need you to tell that to the membership, to the public, to the premier, to the people that attend those meetings. We need you there to counteract when the public say we should privatize maybe the liquor stores or health care or corrections. We need you there to defend what you do every day, because only you know what it is like to work as a public sector worker," Jessome says.

"We need you to let the government know about the importance of public services to our communities and to our economy."

Here are the dates and locations for the initial round of meetings:

  • Sydney - Friday, Jan. 22, Royal Canadian Legion, 10 Wesley St., 6–8 p.m.
  • Port Hawkesbury - Saturday, Jan. 23, Civic Centre, 606 Reeves St., 2–4 p.m.
  • Bridgewater - Monday, Jan. 25, Days Inn, 50 North St., 6–8 p.m.
  • Stellarton - Thursday, Jan. 28, Museum of Industry, 147 North Foord St., 7–9 p.m.
  • Antigonish - Thursday, Jan. 28, Keating Millennuim Centre, 2–4 p.m.

Meetings will also be held in Amherst, Dartmouth, Digby, Eastern Passage, Kentville, Liverpool, Lower Sackville, Tantallon, Truro, Wolfville and Yarmouth. Details on those meetings will be announced later.
