"Jessica is a fighter for what's right and works hard every day to make the lives of workers better. Her energy, dedication, and optimism will serve the Federation of Labour, and the workers in Newfoundland and Labrador well." — Bert Blundon, NUPGE President
St. John's (28 Nov. 2022) — When Mary Shortall, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, announced that she was not seeking another term, people knew there were big shoes to fill. But that didn't stop Jessica McCormick, a research and communications officer with the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE). McCormick put her name forward and on Nov. 23 she became the next leader of the 70,000-member NLFL.
McCormick to focus on improving labour rights
McCormick has been a long-time activist in the labour movement. Prior to joining NAPE/NUPGE, she worked with the Fish Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW).
In an interview with VOCM, McCormick says that "one of the things the NLFL will be focused on is labour legislation reform." They will be looking at improving labour standards, making it easier to join a union, and changing occupational health and safety legislation to address workplace violence and more support for injured workers.
"It is inspiring to see activists like Jessica seeking out leadership roles," said Bert Blundon, President of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE). He was formerly the NAPE Secretary-Treasurer. "Jessica is a fighter for what's right and works hard every day to make the lives of workers better. Her energy, dedication, and optimism will serve the Federation of Labour, and the workers in Newfoundland and Labrador well."
"On behalf of our 425,000 members across Canada, we want to congratulate Jessica on her election. We look forward to working with you," said Blundon.
