Tentative deal reached at Geneva Centre for Autism

Lockout averted for members of Local 548 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union.

Toronto (2 Nov. 2010) - A threatened lockout has been averted at the Geneva Centre for Autism.

Members of Local 548 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract following marathon negotiations.

“We were looking at a lockout starting Oct. 29 but I’m pleased to report that was averted as a result of our tentative settlement,” says Taryn Persaud, chair of the union bargaining team.

Local 548 represents approximately 75 members at the centre.

Labour relations at the centre had become acrimonious in recent weeks following allegations of interference in union activities, misinformation by management to members, coercion and intimidation against staff.

A hearing on these issues at the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) was also averted after the tentative settlement was reached.
