Tentative deal ratified at Saint Mary’s University

Joan Jessome, president of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE)Halifax (18 May 2010) - The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) has ratified a new collective agreement on behalf of support staff at Saint Mary's University in Halifax.

"We are very pleased to have reached this agreement,” says NSGEU president Joan Jessome. “The bargaining team and employee relations officer, Tina Webber, worked hard to reach this agreement. Bargaining was very challenging at times.”

The three-year contract begins July 1, 2009. Highlights include wage increases and improvements in vacation, standby and tuition benefits. The university has also agreed to consider changing its job evaluation system.

Wage increases include 2.9% this July 1 and 2% on each subsequent July 1 during the contract period. The agreement covers workers who provide a wide range of services. They include systems analysts, technicians, clerks, secretaries, coordinators of services, a web developer, library assistants and more.
