Vancouver (19 March 2010) - Talks have begun to reach a new collective agreement for health science professionals represented by the Health Sciences Association of British Columbia (HSABC/NUPGE) and other unions across the province.
The employees deliver the critical diagnostic, clinical and rehabilitation services across British Columbia.
HSABC president Reid Johnson says the mandate from the professionals is to negotiate an agreement that protects quality health care and values work done by the employees.
“We see this round of bargaining as an opportunity for a thoughtful process that will strengthen the system in a way that makes a real difference in the delivery of the specialized skills patients depend on and that health science professionals bring to the modern health care team,” Johnson says.
HSABC is the lead union in the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association (HSPBA), which also includes members of the British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE), the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the Professional Employees Association (PEA), and Hospital Employees' Union (HEU).
Maureen Headley, HSPBA’s chief negotiator, tabled a list of bargaining objectives covering delivery of quality health care, fair wage increases, modernizing the job classification system, recruitment and retention, enhanced quality of work life, improved benefits, sick leave and disability management, job security and seniority, and improved administration of the collective agreement.
