'Time is running short to convince the federal government that it must move to reform the CPP.'
Toronto (24 Nov. 2010) - The next meeting of Canada's finance ministers in Alberta in December offers an important occasion to press for an overhaul of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), including a badly needed increase in benefits, says the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE).
"Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan recently announced his support for a dramatic overhaul of the CPP that would see an expansion of benefits paid out by the CPP on retirement," the union says.
"This move by the finance minister is long overdue and enjoys the full support of OPSEU. But time is running short to convince the federal government that it must move to reform the CPP," OPSEU notes.
The CPP will be a major item when federal, provincial and territorial finance ministers meet next month.
OPSEU says Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan has issued an important consultation paper on pension and has invited the public to respond by the end of November. The document is entitled, Securing Our Retirement Future: Consulting with Ontarians on Canada's Retirement Income System.
"It’s important that we tell the minister that we support his drive for CPP reform – before he meets with his colleagues in Alberta next month," OPSEU emphasizes in an update for its members.
"Do your part to support CPP reform by writing to Finance Minister Duncan today. We’ve prepared a short letter to (Duncan) supporting his effort to improve CPP benefits for all working people."
