Society for Manitobans With Disabilities settles

Deal includes retroactive pay for employees plus improvements in several other areas of the contract.

Winnipeg (9 Feb. 2010) - Members of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) who work with the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities (SMD) have ratified a new collective agreement.

The deal includes retroactive pay for members employed at the time of ratification, a maternity leave top up, improvements to bereavement leave and new contract language protecting members who miss work due to road closures or vehicle breakdown.

"Finalizing a tentative agreement was no small task, particularly since this multi-funded non-profit agency continues to face challenges in securing long-term funding for the services Manitobans rely on every day," MGEU says.

"The recent economic downturn impacted the government funding SMD receives as well as the amount the agency receives through its network of private donors."
