Social workers rally to improve services for Aboriginal children and families in B.C.

"Because when you improve your working conditions, you will be improving the services that you provide to children and families...and we all know that's what this rally is all about." — Stephanie Smith, BCGEU President

Vancouver (17 Oct. 2016) — Members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) and staff who work at Fraser Valley Aboriginal Children and Family Services Society (FVACFSS) rallied outside the agency's main office in Chilliwack on October 13 to draw attention to the crisis in Aboriginal child and family services in the Fraser Valley.

Staff at FVACFSS decided to join BCGEU/NUPGE but have been waiting since June to have their ballots counted.

Stephanie Smith, BCGEU President, spoke at the event. "You need a voice in your worksite to be able to address workload issues," says Smith "because when you improve your working conditions, you will be improving the services that you provide to children and families...and we all know that's what this rally is all about."

BCGEU/NUPGE represents social workers in the Ministry of Children and Family Development and at several delegated Aborigianal agencies such as the Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society and Métis Family Services.
