Ottawa (12 March 2008) - National Social Work Month is being celebrated across the country in March. Workers in each province choose one week in which to mark the occasion.

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is pleased to recognize and thank social workers in all regions for the vital services they provide in their local communities.
Social workers are noted for their dedication to children and families in need. Their work requires heart, integrity and strong professional commitment. It is demanding work and it also poses many challenges.
"The work of social workers is even more important considering the severe economic stress of the times, which makes their workloads even heavier than normal," says James Clancy, national NUPGE president.
"The threat of government cutbacks is putting unfair additional pressure on many of these workers and we need to give them our full support. Whether it's providing counselling services, arranging for the well-being of a child in care, or helping a client apply for income assistance, these workers make a big difference in the lives of Canadians. They make our communities better and our unions stronger," Clancy said.
