Bring your friends, family and co-workers to the Repeal Bill 148 rally on September 21. Show your support for workers' rights.
Halifax (19 Sept. 2017) — On August 22, Stephen McNeil, Premier of Nova Scotia, enacted Bill 148, Public Services Sustainability Act. This heavy-handed piece of legislation affects most of the members (92 per cent) of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees' Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) in 2 ways
- It imposes a non-negotiated wage settlement.
- It also unilaterally removes longstanding articles from collective agreements.
The NSGEU/NUPGE believes that the bill is unconstitutional as it contravenes s. 2(d) (Freedom of Association) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, so the union is continuing to demand the repeal of Bill 148. If the government refuses to repeal the bill, NSGEU/NUPGE will ask Premier McNeil to send the entire bill for review at the Court of Appeal, not just part of it.
Voice your opposition to Bill 148 and government attacks on workers
On September 21, NSGEU/NUPGE members will be joining other unions ata rally at the legislature from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. to collectively voice our opposition to Stephen McNeil’s bullying tactics and demand he repeal the bill.
If you are unable to attend but wish to show your support, click here and add your name to the protest.
Even if you cannot attend the rally, NSGEU President MacLean will let the Premier and your MLA know that what they are doing is wrong and that they need to respect workers' rights and stop interfering in the free collective bargaining process.
