'Let's continue to work together to build a stronger union and improve the lives of workers in both the public and private sectors.'
Charlottetown (17 Sept. 2009) - Shelley Ward has been elected to a second term as president of the P.E.I. Union of Public Sector Employees (PEIUPSE/NUPGE).
Ward emerged victorious in a three-way election conducted via a mail-in vote in which ballots were distributed to union members across P.E.I. The other two candidates were Debbie Bovyer and Elwood Goodwin. Ward's new term of office is for three years.
"I am grateful for the show of support from the membership in this election and I thank everyone who participated," Ward said.
"We have achieved much over the past three years. Let's continue to work together to build a stronger union and improve the lives of workers in both the public and private sectors in Prince Edward Island."
She stressed that upcoming initiatives for the union include lobbying the province for the introduction of pension legislation, continuing to address recruitment and retention issues affecting health care workers, enhancing casual work force rights and raising awareness about the critical need for an effective Employment Insurance (EI) program.
