Regina (26 Oct. 2012) - "What is the net benefit to Saskatchewan people if the government sells off Information Services Corporation (ISC)?" asks Saskatchewan Government and General Employees' Union (SGEU/NUPGE) President Bob Bymoen.
The government recently acknowledged that it is considering privatizing the Crown corporation that is responsible for land titles and other registries for the province. It is preparing legislation - that could be introduced as early as the fall sitting of the legislature - to make the sale possible, according to a CBC news report.
ISC earned $93.3 million for Saskatchewan people from 2007-2011. It provides high quality services, at reasonable costs, to individuals and businesses in our province. As a Crown corporation, it is accountable to the public.
In an era when information can be rapidly transferred around the globe, from corporation to corporation - with individuals having little control over personal data - we want assurances that our information registries are secure.
"With ISC, we know who is handling our information, where it is being stored, and how it is being used", said Bymoen.
"ISC meets the needs of Saskatchewan people. Selling this Crown is just not in the best interests of the province," Bymoen added.
