Delegates gather in Saskatoon to elect new representatives and organize on key issues.
Saskatoon (10 April 2014) — More than 200 delegates from across Saskatchewan will be heading to the Radisson Hotel in Saskatoon from April 10 to 12 for the annual Convention of the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees' Union's (SGEU/NUPGE).
SGEU/NUPGE members head to Convention to elect new representatives and to determine key priorities for the union
Members will be voting on resolutions, electing new term representatives, and raising funds to support the worthy causes of their fellow brothers and sisters in various Local unions.
Elder Margaret Rockthunder of the Piapot First National will be bringing blessings to the opening smudging ceremony alongside SGEU/NUPGE member, Robert Ballantyne, from the union's public service sector. Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) President Larry Hubich and Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison will also be bringing greetings to first-time delegates, returning delegates, and honourary life members, alongside SGEU President Bob Bymoen.
Elections will take place for SGEU President and for the Vice-President positions at the National Union of Public Government Employees (NUPGE) and SFL, as well as a Board of Trustees and alternates for each position.
Delegates will hear from prominent speakers in the labour movement
Guest speakers will include Larry Brown, National Secretary-Treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), SFL President Larry Hubich and progressive labour lawyer, Rick Engel, who represents SGEU/NUPGE in a number of legal battles, including the upcoming Supreme Court Challenge in conjunction with the SFL.
Barb Byers, former SGEU President, and current Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), will also be speaking on promoting tax fairness through the CLC`s Together Fairness Works initiative.
