Protesting replacement of existing homes with private long-term care at an Extendicare facility.
Red Deer (3 June 2010) - The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) is encouraging its members to support Save Our Seniors rallies June 8 and June 24 in Red Deer.
HSAA says in an advisory on its website that members of the Alberta Union of Public Employees (AUPE) are concerned about the pending closure of the Red Deer Nursing Home and Valley Park Manor in Red Deer.
"These public long term care facilities house over 200 beds," HSAA notes.
"Alberta Health Services (AHS) plans to close these facilities later this year to be replaced with private long term care at an Extendicare facility - Michener Hill Village."
HSAA says the Central Alberta Council on Aging (CACA) also opposes the change, citing a current waiting list for long-term care beds of more than 200 seniors in central Alberta and more than 40 in Red Deer.
"Residents and staff are concerned about moving to private facilities which will be needed to replace the closing beds," HSAA adds.
