Saskatchewan Crown corporations are 'endangered'

'This government thinks profits instead of people and this is toxic to our vibrant Crowns.'' - Wendy Sol, Save Our Saskatchewan Crowns (SOS).

Regina (22 May 2009) - Saskatchewan Crown corporations are an "endangered species," says a new coalition called Save Our Saskatchewan Crowns (SOS).

Spokesman Wendy Sol told a conference arranged by the group this week that the policies of Premier Brad Wall and his Saskatchewan Party government have put Crown corporations at risk.

While the government has stopped short of outright privatization of Crown corporations, Sol said it is acting by stealth to erode Crowns, and one of the most obvious ways involves partnerships between Crown corporations and private companies, she added.

She also argued that the government has also missed opportunities to expand Crown corporations and the revenues they generate on behalf of taxpayers.

Sol said the role of Crown corporations differs from that of private businesses. Private companies are designed to make a profit while Crown corporations have "a totally different mandate – to provide service."

"This government thinks profits instead of people and this is toxic to our vibrant Crowns.''

Sol is a vice-president of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP) which represents employees of several Crown corporations. Her comments were published in the Regina Leader-Post.
