Halifax (17 July 2015) — The following opinion piece, written by Joan Jessome, President of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE), appeared in the July 15 edition of the Halifax Chronicle Herald.
When the provincial budget was released on April 9, the Liberal government decided to close 13 Land Registry offices in rural parts of the province.
Now, we are expecting the government to announce that it is planning to privatize this service, along with the Registries of Motor Vehicles and Joint Stocks, altogether.
This government’s long-term agenda is clear: it wants to drastically cut and privatize public services and enter into more costly and wasteful privatization deals.
These decisions will impact every community and drive even more people out of our rural communities and the province.
