Reid Johnson re-elected as President of the HSABC

HSABC/NUPGE represents more than 17,000 health science professionals in the public health care and community social services sectors in British Columbia.

Vancouver (23 April 2013) – At the annual convention of the Health Sciences Association of B.C., Reid Johnson was re-elected as the union's President.

Ali Rirash, a medical laboratory technologist at Victoria General Hospital and Kevin Towhey, a medical radiation technologist at Royal Inland Hospital, also ran for the position. Delegates voted on April 20.

"I appreciate the trust delegates have placed in me," said Johnson, "And I look forward to the work ahead."

Johnson's profile

Johnson had been the HSABC President since April 2007.

Johnson originally joined HSABC/NUPGE in 1988 and has been a full-time member of the union since 1990. He joined the Board of Directors in 1997 and previously served as the union's Secretary-Treasurer overseeing the union's finances and helping to develop annual budgets.

He is a Vice-President of the B.C. Federation of Labour and a member of the Executive Board of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE).

As the union's president, Johnson represents HSABC/NUPGE at provincial bargaining. He also serves on a number of boards and council, such as: 

  • Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's 2020 Task Force, chairing the task force committee on human resources
  • Technology Education and Careers Council
  • Camp Jubilee and
  • Chairs the HSASBC Long Term Disability trusts.

Johnson earned his Masters of Social Work at the University of British Columbia and holds a post-masters certificate in family therapy. He has worked in psychiatry, spinal cord and vocational rehabilitation as well as in family therapy.
