Wages key issue for employees at private manufacturer of cookies, candy and flavoured syrups.

The employees are members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE). Contract negotiations broke off Aug. 23.
NAPE president Carol Furlong says the main issue is wages. Nearly half of the 52 employees forced out by the company have worked at Purity for more than 30 years. Another five have worked there for more than 20 years.
Established in 1924, the privately held business manufactures cookies, candy and flavoured syrups.
