New Brunswick Premier says cuts are about ensuring access to health care services. Not possible when you cut jobs, says community and labour groups.
Fredericton (05 June 2013) – New Brunswick Premier David Alward was forced to defend his government's cuts to public services when he was confronted by frustrated protestors outside the provincial Legislature today.
Susie Proulx-Daigle, President of the New Brunwick Union (NBU/NUPGE) spoke in solidarity to concerned citizens and affected workers saying she and her members will continue to fight for public services across the province that provide for families everywhere. NBU/NUPGE members have been impacted directly by these cuts.
The government announced in April that it would be cutting health care services, highway supervisors, laboratory and medical, paramedical employees and specialized health care professionals. Pleading his case, he told the demonstrators that his government needed to reduce funding to these areas in order to improve access.
This appeared to be a contradiction in terms to many in the province. As one protestor said today, "When you are cutting front-line workers, you're cutting services."
