Supporters of postal delivery want to know why Canada Post and the Conservative government could not wait until the review of the Canadian Postal Service Charter — a public and accountable consultation process — before rushing to gut public postal services.
Ottawa (09 Sept. 2014) — The fight to save door-to-door postal delivery is not over! The pressure to force the Conservative government to consult with the public on the implications of cutting home delivery service across the country is increasing as Parliament returns in a few weeks.
There has been widespread opposition to Canada Post's decision to eliminate door-to-door delivery to hundreds of thousands of Canadians since it was announced on December 11, 2013. Not only have residents raised concern about the impact of forcing people to use community mailboxes but there has been an outcry from seniors' organizations, groups representing disabled people, and businesses about the change in service delivery.
Why couldn't Canada Post and the government wait for the review of the Canadian Postal Service Charter before eliminating door-to-door delivery service?
But now new questions are being raised about the timing of the cuts, especially since this is the fifth anniversary of the 2009 Canadian Postal Service Charter that promises a review of the Charter every five years. Supporters of home delivery want to know why Canada Post and the Conservative government could not wait until the review process — a public and accountable consultation process — before rushing to gut public postal services.
To demonstrate the level of concern, on September 12, members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) will be delivering to Lisa Raitt, minister responsible for Canada Post, 10,000 postcards protesting her failure to consult with the public on a postal charter review and on the cuts to home delivery.
Supporters will be joining postal workers at Victoria Park at 3 p.m. on September 12 to march to Lisa Raitt's constituency office at 86 Main Street East in Milton, Ontario.
