Poll finds Harper PMO has too much power

Nanos Research survey also reveals view that House of Commons may have too little influence.

Stephen HarperOttawa (25 Feb. 2010) - A new poll indicates that Canadians believe the prime minister's office (PMO) under Stephen Harper has too much power.

Conducted by Nanos Research, the survey says 42% of of those polled think the power of the PMO should be reduced. Another 40% think the level of power is about right while 9% believe it is too little. The remainder did not express an opinion.

The poll also indicates that Canadians would like to see the House of Commons have more power . Only 13% thought the country's top legislature had too much power while 20% believed it had too little. Fifty-five per cent (55%) saw the existing level of power as about right.

The poll was taken while Harper is under widespread criticism for proroguing parliament and preventing MPs from continuing normal house business, including an inquiry into the torture of prisoners detained by the Canadian military in Afghanistan.
