Pine Heights Group Home workers pressure government to reconsider privatization plans

Logo of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Pubilc and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE)St. John's (29 April 2014) — Workers at Pine Heights Group Home in Grand Falls – Windsor, who are members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) held a demonstration on April 24, calling on the government to reverse its decision to privatize their Group Home.

NAPE/NUPGE members bring attention to the government's decision to privatize provincial Group Homes

The demonstration took place at the constituency office of Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community Services. 

The provincial government recently announced a new framework for staffed residential care. Part of this process included awarding contracts for three group homes to the private sector. The three group homes affected by the new contracts are T.J MacDonald Achievement Home in Marystown, Pine Heights Group Home in Grand Falls-Windsor, and the Bay St. George Youth Assessment Centre in Stephenville.

As a result of this privatization, 45 public sector workers lost their jobs.

NAPE President Carol Furlong and NAPE Secretary – Treasurer Bert Blundon attended the demonstration to press the government to reconsider its privatization agenda.
