President Shelley Ward says it is 'simply the safest thing to do' in the circumstances. A decision will be made later on when to reschedule.
Charlottetown (6 Nov. 2009) - The P.E.I. Union of Public Sector Employees (PEIUPSE/NUPGE) has postponed its annual convention until further notice in deference to the threat posed by the H1N1 virus and to help control staffing shortages during flu season.
The convention was to have been held Nov. 13-14 in Charlottetown.
President Shelley Ward says the union "has a moral obligation to protect the health and well being" of Island residents.
"It is imperative that our membership remains healthy and continues to provide essential services for Islanders," she said in a statement.
"Postponing our annual convention to prevent the unnecessary spread of the H1N1 virus is simply the safest thing to do at this point in time. Acting as leaders in our respective communities, the board of directors has fully supported this decision as it is in the best interests of the membership and those the membership serves."
A decision will be made later on when the convention can be rescheduled. PEIUPSE is the largest labour union in the province, representing more than 5,000 members in both the public and private sectors.
