“If [the] government insists on making any changes to this benefit, it would ultimately have to be dealt with through the collective bargaining process.” — Karen Jackson, PEI UPSE President
Charlottetown (20 April 2016) — After attending the provincial budget lock-up on April 19, where stakeholders receive a preview of the details just before they are presented in the legislature, Karen Jackson, President of the PEI Union of Public Sector Employees (PEIUPSE/NUPGE), said, “I am pleased with government’s commitment to maintain front-line public services to Islanders. This includes an increase in spending in health care that will see an increase in social work positions in rural areas of Prince Edward Island.”
She explained that “the membership identified a need for improved access to social services in rural areas.”
PEI government commits to maintain public services but eyes retirement benefits
Jackson identified that the government’s intention to review the retirement pay benefit was an area of concern. She said, “The Finance Minister has assured her that government will consult with the unions in relation to the retirement pay issue, and that these consultations will take place in the future.”
However, Jackson also said that “if government insists on making any changes to this benefit, it would ultimately have to be dealt with through the collective bargaining process.” PEI UPSE/NUPGE will continue to monitor any changes or impacts to the membership as a result of the budget.
