New regulated child care system goes into effect across the province in September.
Charlottetown (11 Aug. 2010) - The Prince Edward Island government has released the names of the child care operations chosen to become Early Years Centres this fall under a new province-wide regulated child care system.
The centres will receive financial assistance from the government in exchange for agreeing to adhere certain regulations and standards. Those include a new curriculum, set rates and guidelines on what food can be served.
Linda Lowther, assistant deputy minister for early childhood development, says 34 centres have been approved to open in September. They are located in communities across the Island. Several applicants were rejected but may try to qualify in the next round.
Lowther says contracts with centres that have been approved will soon be signed.
The Early Childhood Development Association of P.E.I. plans to hold meetings with operators to discuss how to meet all the new requirements, including setting up parent advisory boards.
