Toronto (4 Sept. 2012) - On the heels of a large rally of provincial correctional officers, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) released a video to inform the media and all members of provincial parliament (MPPs) about the dispute at the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre (HWDC).
The video contains footage of an August 28 rally when busloads of correctional officers, from all over southern Ontario, went to Queen's Park to demonstrate their solidarity with the struggle of workers at HWDC.
Led by OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas and Dan Sidsworth, chair of the Corrections Division, a large delegation lined up to attend the first day of the legislature and drive home the point to the government that their members must not be penalized for insisting on proper health and safety procedures in their workplaces.
This issue is still not resolved as management has broken off negotiations. In response, as Sidsworth has formally informed management, the union has withdrawn from all joint committees (except Health and Safety).
