Situation only modestly better over past four years
Toronto (11 July 2007) - Oct. 10 is election day in Ontario and it’s already time to get involved in a campaign that could have enormous impact on the future of public services and on the job security of public sector workers, says the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE).
When the McGuinty Liberals came to power in 2003, they pledged to restore full-funding to public services after eight years of budget cutbacks by the anti-public-sector Conservative regime of premiers Mike Harris and Eves.
Sadly, the McGuinty track record has been less than promised. As a result, OPSEU is launching a campaign called Ontario Can Do Better to draw attention to the serious challenges facing the public sector during the next term of office of whatever party is elected.
While some modest improvements have been made by the Liberals, including an increase in overall spending on education and health care, there has also been a cost. Some services and programs have suffered cuts. In education, more and more schools face closure. In colleges and universities, class sizes are growing against a backdrop of rising tuition fees.
It is important for all OPSEU members to make their views known to MPPs who are seeking re-election and to candidates who are running for all parties. NUPGE
