Plug-ins and battery-powered vehicles will get special carpool, parking and recharging perks.
Toronto (4 Nov. 2009) - Ontario will introduce green licence plates next year for owners of plug-in hybrids and battery-powered electric vehicles.
The provincial transportation ministry says electric vehicles with the plates will be able to travel in carpool lanes until 2015 — even if only one person is in the vehicle.
Owners of eligible vehicles will also be able to use recharging stations at GO Transit and other provincially owned parking lots, and have access to special parking spots at designated university and retail locations.
The province hopes that one of every 20 passenger vehicles on Ontario's roads will be electric by 2020. The new licence plate design was chosen by Ontario residents from a list of four choices shown in an online poll.
