OPSEU plans to "decommission the Drummond Commission" by fighting for quality public services and tax fairness.

logo fo rthe ONtario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU)Toronto (6 June 2011) - The Ontario government has issued a press release announcing the members of the Drummond Commission and outlining its plans moving forward. The Commission on the Reform of Ontario's Public Services, also known as the Drummond Commission, was set out in the 2011 budget with a mandate to cut programs and services. The commission will report to the Minister of Finance with recommendations for inclusion in the upcoming 2012 budget.

As detailed in the release, the commission will be chaired by former Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the TD Bank, Don Drummond. Further commission members will include Carol Stephenson, Susan Pigott and Dominic Giroux. Stephenson is currently dean of the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Pigott is vice president of communications and community engagement at Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Giroux is former assistant deputy minister with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Delegates at the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) convention in April provided the union with a mandate to “decommission the Drummond Commission” and hold its own hearings across the province on tax fairness and quality public services.

OPSEU/NUPGE is urging members and the public to call the government’s toll-free “public inquiry” number to provide feedback about the wage freeze and service cuts: 1-800-337-7222.

You can find more about the wage freeze and government cuts to the Ontario Public Service on the Ontario government web site (http://www.fin.gov.on.ca/en/savings/).
