OPSEU college members to employer: We're here to bargain.
Toronto (13 June 2011) - Members of the community college sector met with the employer on June 7 to begin negotiations but were frustrated by the employer's lack of preparation.
The two parties exchanged proposals but the employer's lacked any mention of a monetary position yet included many vague concessions the employer is looking to achieve from the members.
From the last round of bargaining, changes were made to the Colleges Collective Bargaining Act (CCBA) which now imposes shortened timelines during the bargaining process. OPSEU/NUPGE has been prepared for these changes and presented the employer a thorough and thoughtful package.
The Colleges requested these changes to bargaining timelines yet are now unprepared to adhere to them. To ensure the timelines are met and bargaining is taken seriously, OPSEU/NUPGE college members are being asked to provide the bargaining committee with a strong strike mandate.
A date for a strike vote will be set in the near future with the assistance of the Ministry of Labour. Members are encouraged to check the union's website for further updates.
