"Ken is delivering the kind of programs the affiliates want and the membership needs. Ken is doing what we asked him to do, and he's doing it well. He will have my vote at the CLC Convention." — Larry Brown, NUPGE National Secretary-Treasurer
Ottawa (25 April 2014) — Larry Brown, National Secretary-Treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has put his support behind Ken Georgetti for President in the upcoming elections at the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC).
Brown supports Ken Georgetti in re-election for CLC President
"The last couple of years have seen unprecedented unity within the ranks of the CLC affiliates and the launching of a campaign of media advertising and membership mobilization that is making a real difference in the public perception of the labour movement, and in member engagement," says Brown.
"These are challenging times for labour," he continues. "We need real, program-based unity; we need effective leadership; we need an experienced hand on the wheel.
Georgetti's strong leadership driving the CLC
With campaigns like Municipalities Matter and Together FAIRNESS WORKS the CLC has been working to move beyond the activist base of affiliates and energize the grassroots of the labour movement. At a critical time when the Conservative government is throwing everything it can, both at unions and the public, we need to be reaching out to share with Canadians the valuable role labour plays in making our society fairer for everyone.
Georgetti's leadership on issues such as retirement security for all to increase the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) has already been supported by provincial governments, and even the former governor of the Bank of Canada, David Dodge. It focuses on the best way to improve the lives of all Canadians, not just union members, through the CPP rather than relying on personal savings or risky retirement savings plans. The Rethink Child Care campaign engages members and the public in a conversation about the issues in new and exciting ways. It is about listening to people who are affected by the issue and working together for positive solutions.
"Ken is delivering the kind of programs the affiliates want and the membership needs. Ken is doing what we asked him to do, and he's doing it well. He will have my vote at the CLC Convention," said Brown.
