Most Canadians are worried about their retirement security. NUPGE is pressing the federal government to hold a national summit with a series of radio ads launched this week in the nation's capital.
Ottawa (15 Feb. 2010) - The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is pressing the federal government to organize a national summit that would bring together government, business, labour and other stakeholders to discuss and bring forward a concrete plan to improve retirement security for Canadians.
The union is taking its message to the airwaves with a three week radio ad campaign in the nation's capital. The ads will be playing on 13 different Ottawa area radio stations from February 15 to March 5.
"Improving retirement security is a top concern and priority for Canadians," said James Clancy, NUPGE national president. "A national summit that brings together all stakeholders is the logical first step toward developing a plan to improve retirement security for Canadians."
Today, only one in five workers belongs to a workplace pension plan. RRSP's have failed miserably in providing retirement security for the vast majority of middle and low income Canadians. Our public pension system provides a secure income in retirement but the benefit levels fall short of what is needed to maintain a decent standard of living in retirement.
"The best way forward is to increase benefits available under the Canada Pension Plan and the Guaranteed Income Supplement,” said Clancy.
NUPGE is also involved in a campaign with the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) and other unions across the country to rebuild and reform Canada's pension system. You can read the three key proposals in the CLC’s campaign by clicking here:
