"Messages of solidarity are heart-warming, but what Ukranians need right now is on-the-ground support. We are pleased to be able to make this donation on behalf of our 400,000 members across Canada." — Larry Brown, NUPGE President
Ottawa (18 March 2022) — After seeing the constant shelling of buildings, displaced residents in city after city, and Ukranians fleeing for their safety, the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) will be donating $50,000 to the humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine.
NUPGE pledges financial support for humanitarian aid in Ukraine
"Messages of solidarity are heart-warming, but what Ukranians need right now is on-the-ground support," said Larry Brown, NUPGE President. "We are pleased to be able to make this donation on behalf of our 400,000 members across Canada."
The National Executive Board will be providing $25,000 to the Red Cross and $25,000 to the International Trade Union Confederation-European Public Service Union (ITUC-EPSU) from NUPGE's John Fryer Fund. Previously known as the Social Justice and Solidarity Fund, this fund was renamed after Fryer's death in 2020. Fryer led the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) as General Secretary and then as President of the National Union for 9 years. This fund provides financial support for international causes.
"Many people living in Canada can only imagine the trauma the people of Ukraine are experiencing," added Bert Blundon, NUPGE Secretary-Treasurer. "If our contributions can help in any way to reduce some of the suffering, then we have put action to our words."
