NUPGE donates to Oxfam to fight food crisis

"As we work together to fight crises around the world, Oxfam Canada is a strong ally here at home to counter the issues of centralized wealth, poverty, and the gender wage gap." — Elisabeth Ballermann, NUPGE Secretary-Treasurer

Ottawa (13 June 2017) — Oxfam is an international confederation of 20 organizations working together with partners and local communities in more than 90 countries. Oxfam works to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. They save lives and help rebuild livelihoods when crisis strikes. And Oxfam campaigns so that the voices of the poor influence the local and global decisions that affect them. Oxfam works with partner organization and alongside vulnerable women and men to end the injustices that cause poverty.

NUPGE recognizes Oxfam's work to eradicate poverty around the world

In Canada, Oxfam Canada combines emergency response, long-term development projects, and campaigning to tackle the root causes of poverty and inequality.

Elisabeth Ballermann, NUPGE Secretary-Treasurer, in a letter to Julie Delahanty, Executive Director of Oxfam Canada, offered a donation of $10,000 to go towards the serious food crisis in South Sudan, Nigeria, the Horn of Africa and Yemen.

"As you know, this is not the first time that NUPGE has contributed to Oxfam Canada in the wake of a human crisis in some region of the world," wrote Ballermann. "As trade unionists, we strongly believe that our commitment to solidarity and human rights must extend internationally, as well as within our borders. We must not simply sit by as others in the world suffer."

Shared core values, NUPGE supports work of Oxfam

Many of Oxfam's campaigns reflect NUPGE's focus on, and concern with, income inequality.

"As we work together to fight crises around the world, Oxfam Canada is a strong ally here at home to counter the issues of centralized wealth, poverty, and the gender wage gap," said Ballermann.

"We recognize that Oxfam shares many of our core values — solidarity, a respect for human rights and dignity, and the value of working both locally and internationally. The National Union and its Components strongly value the work that Oxfam does and want to thank you for your continued efforts," said Ballermann.
