Ottawa (05 Sept. 2017) — Last week, Hurrican Harvey hit Texas plowing through cities and towns. One of the hardest hit was Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States. Walls, floors and roofs were ripped off and buildings were flooded. Boats, trailers, and cars littered the streets. Power lines are down and evacuees are living in shelters. People are rescuing their neighbours, and strangers, with boats and monster trucks. Business owners are turning their stores into shelters to keep people safe. Volunteers are going back to locate missing pets.
"We're watching this on TV," said Larry Brown, President of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), "and our hearts are breaking for the losses."
"We have seen the horror that Harvey has left in its wake. But we've also seen the kindness shown by strangers in helping each other recover and heal from this tragedy. It's that spirit that will rebuild these communities." said Brown.
"And although we may be far away, we want to show our solidarity in any way we can. It's times like these, when a disaster takes place, you need to count on your friends," said Brown.
"That's why the National Union has donated $10,000 to the Red Cross to assist with emergency relief and recovery efforts in Texas. We have also answered the call by the American Federation of Teachers with a donation of $1,000." Brown said.
"Our thoughts are with all those affected."
