Ottawa (21 Oct. 2020) — The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) joins with organizations across Ontario to celebrate Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day.
Giving child care workers the recognition they deserve
October 22, 2020, is the 20th anniversary of this day that recognizes the commitment, hard work, and qualifications of early childhood educators (ECEs) and all staff who work with children.
The theme of this year’s Appreciation Day is Rising Up! ECEs and staff have faced pronounced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on top of the existing ones. But these workers have also risen to the challenge and are rising up to call for better wages, working conditions, and supports for the sector.
The Ontario government’s proposed changes to the child care regulations signal a step backwards, as outlined in a recent analysis by Carolyn Ferns in the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) blog.
Child care must be part of the she-covery
A well-supported child care system in Ontario and across the country must be part of the post-Covid recovery, as part of what’s become known as a she-covery.
NUPGE has been advocating for a national child care system for decades. NUPGE and its Components have been calling on the federal government to commit to (and ensure the necessary funding for) a universally accessible, publicly funded, not for profit, and high-quality system across the country. This system must also fairly compensate and support its workforce and enhance unionization.
Celebrations will be virtual
As with everything in 2020, the celebrations for this year’s Child Care Worker and ECE Appreciation Day will be happening virtually. You can find out how to participate at the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care (OCBCC) website.
The Appreciation Day celebrations link up with OCBCC’s broader Rising Up! campaign. Staff, parents, and community members can sign the e-petition, read and share the Rising Up for Child Care stories, and share their own story.
