Ottawa (03 June 2021) — Following the passing of John Fryer in November 2020, a former President of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), the National Executive Board searched for a fitting way to honour his legacy.
"John had a long history in the labour and social movements, one that deserves recognition for his outstanding contributions," said Larry Brown, NUPGE President. "From this point on, all contributions and donations for international causes will be made in John's name. We have, up to now, called the funding in this area, the Social Justice and Solidarity Fund. We would now call it the John Fryer Fund. In this manner, his name will be kept alive in the work of the National Union long into the future."
Fighter at home and around the world
While John made a major contribution to the cause of working-class people in Canada, he also played a role in international affairs. His commitment to achieving justice for all was deeply ingrained in his trade unionism. (See: John Fryer: Tireless fighter for social and economic change)
