Smoothing process may allow scheduled of 40 hours one week and 30 hours the next.
Halifax (19 Aug. 2010) - The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) is working to come up with an alternative to a recent decision by the province to cut back on the guaranteed hours of work for casual and part-time deputy sheriffs.
The department of justice says the plan will affect 23 of 190 deputies working at courts across the province. Three centres would not be affected - Sydney, Halifax and Bridgewater. Those experiencing reduced hours would be cut by 20% or more.
NSGEU president Joan Jessome says the union has talked with provincial officials about the issue and is hoping for a meeting soon to tackle the issue.
Jessome says the union is looking at an approach known as smoothing that would let affected employees work 40 hours one week and 30 hours the next. If no resolution is reached, the union is planning an information picket for Sept. 1, Jessome says.
