Members gather from across the province to set priorities for the next round of collective bargaining.
Dartmouth (30 Sept. 2010) - Members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union's (NSGEU/NUPGE) home support bargaining committees from Cape Breton to Yarmouth met this week to review input from surveys and shape bargaining priorities for a new round of contract negotiations.
New members worked side by side with experienced members reviewing the existing collective agreement and discussing which areas to highlight when bargaining begins.
Clarence Brown, president of NSGEU Local 76, briefed members on an important initiative to create a single home support table where all the common items could be negotiated for members across the province. “All other issues will be bargained with the particular agencies,” he said.
The day began with opening remarks and a discussion of the bargaining climate and context by NSGEU president Joan Jessome.
Following are some of the statistics gleaned from information provided by members: 67% are 46 years of age or older, 35% are part-time employees, 40% have 16 to 20 years of service, 22% have one to five years of service and 23% have six to 10 years of service.
