NSGEU members at Dalhousie University's Agricultural campus vote to strike

Outstanding issues include wages, job security and displacement rights, and job classification and appeal process.

Truro (22 Jan. 2015) — Members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) employed by the Agricultural Campus of Dalhousie University have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike to back their bargaining demands.

Strong strike vote supports bargaining proposals

The NSGEU/NUPGE members affected are those who work in all areas of the Agricultural campus, including clerical, professional, maintenance, technical and service, and research.

The votes were counted on January 21 and 81 per cent of those who cast a ballot voted to strike.

Total number of voters: 151

Total number of yes votes: 123

“The vital work our members do every day keeps the campus functioning efficiently,” says Joan Jessome, NSGEU President. “This local has sent a strong message of support to their Bargaining Committee as they head into conciliation.”

The union and employer are negotiating the merger of the bargaining unit's 174 members into existing Dalhousie NSGEU bargaining units. These negotiations were necessitated by the merger of Dalhousie and the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 2012.

Outstanding issues include: wages, job security and displacement rights, and job classification and appeal process.

The current collective agreement expired on March 31, 2012.
