Members support baragaining demands with overwhelming strike vote.
Halifax (15 May 2013) – Members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) who work for the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board have taken a strike vote to support their bargaining priorities.
Strong strike vote
Strike ballots were counted in Truro on May 13, showing a result of 91 per cent in favor of strike action. Out of 434 votes cast, 396 voted yes.
Workers look to improve conditions
“The employer wants us to move backwards and accept concessions,” says NSGEU President Joan Jessome. “We are not prepared to do this. Our members are asking for respect at the bargaining table with improvements to working conditions – not takeaways.”
The members work as educational assistants, clerks, administrative professionals, information technology specialists, librarians and library specialists in the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board.
Their last contract expired June 30, 2012.
