NSGEU launches Charter challenge to Bill 148

"As you can see, the fight for a fair collective agreement is not over and we will be using all the legal means we have to fight Bill 148." — Jason MacLean, NSGEU President.

Halifax (05 Sept. 2017) — On August 22, the Nova Scotia government imposed Bill 148 on 75,000 members of the public service. The bill affects thousands of members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE)

In response, the NSGEU/NUPGE has launched a court challenge to the legislation. Through legal counsel, the union served Notice of Intended Action in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, in which we claim that Bill 148 contravenes s. 2(d) (Freedom of Association) of the Charter of Rights in regards to Civil Service bargaining. You can read the filing here. NSGEU/NUPGE says that the description of the grounds for the action, as well as the Charter argument, are of particular interest.

"As you can see, the fight for a fair collective agreement is not over and we will be using all the legal means we have to fight Bill 148," said Jason MacLean, NSGEU President.

Rally against Bill 148  planned for September 21

When Premier McNeil opens the Legislature on September 21, the NSGEU/NUPGE will be there as part of a rally of organized labour from across Nova Scotia. Please save the date and spread the word.
